Who is an Anesthesiologist?

Anesthesiologist is a physician who provides general or regional anesthesia and monitors the patient’s condition during and shortly after surgery.

The task of the anesthesiologist is not just to eliminate the pain. He assesses the patient’s general condition, selects the drug and dosage as accurately as possible. Throughout the operation, the doctor accompanies the patient: measures blood pressure, monitors the cardiogram, corrects his condition and provides a gradual awakening.

The success of surgery depends on the qualified work of the anesthesiologist on 50%. This specialist works with the patient longer than the surgeon. He leads the patient to the operation, stays during the operation and monitors patient’s condition in the postoperative period. Complications and situations requiring urgent care can occur during complex interventions under general anesthesia. In this case, anesthesiologists carry out resuscitation measures and intensive care.

How the consultation with anesthesiologist is held?

Anesthesiologists-resuscitators of the ADONIS group of hospitals provide planned and emergency qualified care to patients and are familiar with all modern methods of anesthesia.

Before the operation, which requires anesthesia, the patient is consulted by an anesthesiologist. The consultation starts with a detailed conversation and examination. Based on the tests results, instrumental studies and the patient’s condition, the anesthesiologist selects the most appropriate type of analgesia. He takes into account the individual characteristics of the drug  tolerability, the wishes of the patient and the type of manipulation.

Our specialists are constantly learning, monitoring progressive innovations and applying the best of them in their practice.

What types of anesthesia are used in ADONIS?

In our department of anesthesiology, we apply all modern techniques of carrying out the general and regional anesthesia. To ensure patient safety, we use the latest tools, drugs and disposable consumables from European manufacturers.

Types of anesthesia used in ADONIS:

General anesthesia – special drugs affect the central nervous system. At this time, the patient is on mechanical ventilation. He is unconscious, pain sensitivity and muscle tone are disabled. Our specialists provide all types of general anesthesia: intravenous, inhalation and endotracheal.

Sedation – disabling consciousness with the help of medicated sleep. Drugs are administered intramuscularly or intravenously. Breathing is preserved, consciousness is reduced or disabled, muscle tone is reduced. More often this method is used in pediatric surgery, dentistry and other areas. Medication sleep is used during correction of dislocations, removal of stones in kidneys and bladder, abortions and colonoscopies.

Local (regional) anesthesia – doctors perform local anesthesia of a certain part of the patient’s body by interrupting nerve impulses. We perform regional central anesthesia. It involves the introduction of a special solution into the spinal cord and is divided into spinal cord, epidural and combined. Under such anesthesia, the person loses sensitivity in the lower area, lower the lumbar region. It is used in cesarean section, phlebectomy and other procedures.

Regional peripheral anesthesia – with this type of anesthesia there is a blockade of peripheral nerves without affecting the brain and spinal cord. The drug is administered subcutaneously or into the submucosal base. It is used during operations on the upper extremities, in the treatment of wounds, dental treatment and other procedures.

In addition to anesthesia itself, anesthesiologists perform a number of actions.

  • Prepare the patient for a surgery: study the anamnesis, consult, prescribe tests, determine contraindications and the type of analgesia.
  • Monitor the patient’s condition: monitor heart rate and blood pressure, watch the oxygen intake in the blood, perform an ECG and capnography.
  • Monitor the patient’s condition in the postoperative period: restore breathing and consciousness, perform pulse oximetry, biochemical monitoring.
  • In case of force majeure, the resuscitator performs resuscitation.

How intensive care units are equipped?

All equipment and consumables used for analgesia meet high quality standards and are periodically inspected.

The clinic uses only modern drugs and technologies for all types of anesthesia.

The surgical rooms are equipped with Drager anesthesia-breathing devices (Germany) for inhalation anesthesia.

Intensive care units also have mechanical ventilation devices, tracking equipment and all the necessary tools to help patients.

Staff work

During the operation under general anesthesia, the human body is exposed to serious stress, so anesthesiologists-resuscitators constantly monitor the patient’s condition.

Our specialists approach each patient carefully and responsibly and do everything possible to quickly restore the patient.

Anesthesiologists and nurses of ADONIS are constantly improving their skills, attending various conferences, congresses, seminars and thematic courses on anesthesiology and intensive care. Intensive care physicians have extensive experience in providing emergency care to critically ill patients.
